Recycling your e-bike and battery
Every Ridem e-bike is electrical equipment powered by a lithium-ion battery. In the UK, electrical items and batteries must be collected and recycled separately from household waste, under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013 and the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. This page explains how to dispose of each part of your bike responsibly.
Recycling at a glance
- The e-bike (frame, motor, display and wiring): take it to your local household waste recycling centre and leave it with the electrical items. Never put it in your household bin.
- The lithium-ion battery: never put it in a household bin or recycling bin. Take it to a recycling centre that accepts e-bike batteries. Check with your local council first, as not every site accepts them.
- The charger: recycle it with small electrical items at your local recycling centre.
- The packaging: flatten cardboard and put it in your paper and card recycling. Check your council's guidance for any plastic wrapping or foam.
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on electrical products and batteries means they must not be thrown away with general household waste. They need to go to a dedicated collection point so that valuable materials can be recovered and hazardous substances handled safely.
Battery safety at the end of its life
- Lithium-ion batteries thrown in household bins can start fires in bin lorries and waste sites, so always keep them separate.
- Before taking a battery for recycling, cover its terminals with insulating tape.
- If a battery is damaged, swollen, leaking or overheating, stop using and charging it, store it outdoors away from anything flammable, and ask your local council for advice on disposing of it safely.
- Never open, puncture or crush a battery.
Give your bike a longer life first
Before recycling, consider whether your bike can be repaired, sold or donated. If something isn't working, contact us: parts may be covered by our 2-year warranty on the frame and motor or our 1-year warranty on the battery.
Find your nearest recycling point
You can find your nearest recycling centre for electricals and batteries on the Recycle Now website, or on your local council's website.
